The rules

How the total is scored

Interest compounds daily at 4% a year from 1 July after each season until the day you open this page. Only Premier League seasons from 2008–09 through 2017–18 are included. The pound amounts are an educated calculation of lost earnings from football accounts.

Finished below City

Every club that finished below Manchester City that season: £3m, plus interest from the following 1 July.

Pushed in Europe

Remove City from the table and shift clubs up. If a club would have made the Champions League but only got Europa League: £20m CL revenue + £10m receipts + £10m sponsors. If a club would have made CL or EL but missed Europe entirely: the same £40m, labelled for the competition they would have made. Only when City occupied the relevant European place; only clubs whose status actually changes.

Lost the title

When City won the league, the runner-up already has the £3m “finished below” line. On top: £10m sponsor bonus + £10m boosted earnings. Manchester United or Liverpool only, when second to a City title: a further £20m for reputational damage.

Cup final

When City won the FA Cup or League Cup, only the club they beat in that final: £5m boosted revenue. Not every round.

Research notes

League tables and European cut-offs drawn from season pages and compiled tables (Wikipedia Premier League season articles; englishfootballstats.co.uk Level 1 tables). Cup finals from published FA Cup and League Cup records. Domestic Conference League places are ignored except where needed to see that a club did not receive Champions League or Europa League football.

Seasons included: 2008–09 through 2017–18 only (the charged window).
Seasons skipped for missing tables: none.
